Scanning into Terminal Services/Citrix from a workstation that has no scanner
There are times when you may need to scan from a scanner that is not attached to the workstation
that is connected into the Terminal Server or Citrix session. This is common in situations like a
nursing station where there are several workstation machines, PC's or Thinclients, but only a
single scanner available to all the workstations. Instead of forcing each user to use only the
machine with the scanner plugged into it, RemoteScan™ gives you the ability to in a few simple steps
to allow all of the workstations to scan from that single scanner, directly into the Terminal Server
or Citrix hosted application, allowing each user to stay logged into their session from whatever
workstation machine they are using.
First and foremost, there needs to be a scanner plugged into a PC or XPe thinclient that has
RemoteScan™ Server already installed and running on that machine. If you have any questions, be
sure to read the
RemoteScan™ Server Installation Instructions.
On that machine that has the scanner attached to it, right click on the RemoteScan™ icon in the
system tray and select options.
In the options dialog, insure that "Server Broadcasting" is turned on and then save the options.
Now, on the workstation that does NOT have the scanner attached to it, go ahead and install the
RemoteScan™ Server by following the
installation instructions.
Once you have installed the RemoteScan™ Server it will notify you that it cannot find any attached
devices, just acknowledge the message (with a smile of course) and close that dialog.
Now, click on start, then 'all programs', then 'RemoteScan' then 'utilities' and then finally
'Link this scannerless workstation to a scanner'.
When you click on that menu item you will see the following dialog:
This dialog simply lets you know that all scanning from other applications connecting to this machine
using RemoteScan will be redirected to a different scanner, which is what we want because we want to
direct all scanning requests to a machine that actually has a scanner attached to it.
After you select 'yes' you will be presented with the following dialog that will be populated with
all machines on your LAN that have RemoteScan servers running that are "broadcasting".
You can select which ever machine and scanner that you would like to use as your primary scanning
station and then press the 'Select for Redirection' button. You can also setup a machine manually that
has not been setup to broadcast by selecting the 'add' button and filling out the necessary
information.
Once you have selected which machine/scanner to redirect your scanning requests to and have pressed
the button, then the icon in the System tray will refresh in a few seconds and display the
redirection icon which looks like this:
The red dot indicates that redirection is working. Now, every time that you execute a scan from
within Terminal Services or Citrix, it will scan from the other scanner that you have selected.
