RemoteScan Software User Manual for RemoteScan compoent that is installed onto Terminal Server or Citrix® Server(s)

See separate instructions for RemoteScan component which is installed onto end user workstations.

Note: in the this document, as well as in the setup program, the RemoteScan component which is installed onto the Terminal or Citrix Server(s) is referred to as 'RemoteScan Client'. This is because, technically, this component of the RemoteScan software is a 'Client' component.
Please do NOT install this component onto the enduser workstations.

Installation of RemoteScan Client (component that gets installed onto the TS/CX Server).
RemoteScan is provided as self extracting, self installing file (RemoteScanASP.exe). RemoteScanASP.exe contains both the Server and the Client software for RemoteScan. The Terminal Server/Citrix version of of RemoteScan allows you to use a scanner located on the local Workstation to scan directly into a Terminal Server or Citrix hosted application.

The RemoteScan client portion of the software consists of our own TWAIN driver that must be installed for each user that needs to do scanning directly into the Terminal or Citrix Server hosted application. The RemoteScanASP installation file will install this driver for either the person you are logged in as, or if you are an administrator it will install the client software for all users on the server. If you are an advanced administrator and need to have more control on who and how the client software is installed, please follow the link and read our section about the rslogon.bat and more advanced means of controlling users and scanning ability.

The first step is to log onto the desktop of the Terminal or Citrix server. You will need to have permission to download an executable from the internet and run it. If you do not have internet access, then you will need to have access to the RemoteScan installation file on the machine somewhere. To get the file, proceed to the RemoteScan Customer Login area and log in and download the installation file from there.

After you have saved the distribution file, RemoteScanASP.exe, to your server open it and run it. You do this either from the download dialog box, or from your file explorer and then follow the on screen prompts.

After some initial screens asking you to agree to a Terms of Agreement and some additional pages explaining some details, you will be prompted with the following screen:

Insure that you have selected "Install the client software on the Terminal / Citrix Server". Yes, you will be installing the RemoteScan client software on the server. Once you insure that you have the client option checked, hit the next button to proceed. If you are logged in as an administrator you will be prompted whether you want to update all users directories:

If you would like to atempt to update all of the users directories, please follow this link:

Update All Users Directories

Also, if you are an administrator you will be presented with the option of update Microsoft Products to allow scanning. By default, the Terminal Server versions of the Microsoft Office Suite applications are unable to do scanning. If you use any of the applications displayed in the dialog below inside of Terminal Services or Citrix and desire to have scanning enabled within those applications, please select which ones you would like to have modified.

Keep in mind, in order to perform this change, there can be no users logged onto the terminal server that are running the specified applications. For busy offices or offices with many users, this may mean running the RemoteScan installation at a different time during off hours to insure that the modifications happen to those Microsoft applications.

After selecting the Microsoft applications, or not if you are not an Adminstrator, you will be prompted whether you would like the install application to modify the computers personal fire, this is optional on Terminal Services / Citrix installs, but we encourage selecting this setting just in case Windows Firewall is up and running and you need to do some advanced RemoteScan configuration at a later date.

If you have not elected to update all users directories, then that should be it for the configuration part of the install and the rest will be handled for you. Once the installation file has completed, you can close the isntaller and that should be it. In order to check that the install executed correctly, you can go into what ever application you plan to use for scanning and that supports the TWAIN interface for scanning and then select your TWAIN source. RemoteScan(TM) should show up as scanner, if it does not, something did not install correctly and you should check with your IT staff to see if you have permission to write to your own homepath. That concludes this portion of the installation.

Updating all user directories (Administrators only).

If you have elected to update all users directories to allow all users to scan, then you will be presented with a series of dialogs to help the install application locate and update all the directories. The first dialog screen explains the different ways that the client portion of the software can be installed for various or all of the users. You can also find out more information on the page that explains the rslogon.bat logon script.

If you would like the installer to attempt to update all of the directories, press the botton with the "1>" on it to proceed. The installer will then attempt to locate the directory where the users directories are found.

Specify a username other thant he one you are currently logged in as and press the 'next' button. The next dialog explains what was found so that you can determine if it is the proper location.

Note: The directory that should be found is the homepath, which is NOT always the same as the profile path. The certain way to determin what the homedrive and homepath are for your users is to log in as a normal user and then bring up a "cmd" prompt. From there, type "set" and hit enter. This will display a series of system variables including "homedrive" and "homepath". This is the directory that should be selected for this installation when updating all users accounts.

If everything checks out, continue with the install. Once you have finished with the rest of the installation settings and the application begins the install process, you will be prompted with a dialog asking you to browse to the parent directory of the user accounts with the suggested directory based off the findings earlier.

Just browse to and select the parent directory of the homepath of all the users.

Once selected, hit 'OK' and you will see a dialog with 5 usernames retrieved from that directory. If the usernames appear to be valid user accounts on the system press the 'Yes' botton and the install application will modify those directories and complete the RemoteScan Client installation.

At this point in time all of the user accounts will have the RemoteScan client TWAIN driver installed so that they can all see RemoteScan as a TWAIN source. If at a later point in time you have new accounts added, to get the RemoteScan client installed for them you can either run the RemoteScan installation file for that one user, copy over the files for that user, use the rslogon.bat file, or update all user accounts again.
